What is thermal energy storage (TES)

A heating battery, also known as thermal energy storage (TES), is a system that stores heat energy for later use. It works by absorbing heat from a source, such as a resistive heater or a heat pump, and storing it in a medium, such as sand or phase-change materials. The stored heat can then be used for space or water heating.

One of the main advantages of a heating battery is that it allows for the separation of heat generation and consumption. This means that heat can be generated during periods of low demand, such as during the day when the sun is shining, and then stored for use during periods of high demand, such as at night or during cold weather. This can help to reduce the overall costs of heating, as well as the carbon emissions associated with it.

There are several types of heating batteries available on the market, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages. The most common types include:

Thermal energy storage tanks: These are the most common type of heating battery and are used to store heat in the form of hot water. They work by absorbing heat from a heat source, such as a solar thermal collector or a heat pump, and storing it in a tank. The stored heat can then be used for space or water heating.

Phase-change materials: These are materials that can absorb and release large amounts of heat energy as they change from a solid to a liquid state. They can be used to store heat in a heating battery, and then release it as needed.

Latent heat storage systems: These systems use a material that can absorb and release large amounts of heat energy as it changes phase, such as water, salt hydrate, or paraffin.

Sand Battery: This type of storage uses sand to absorb the heat and release it when the time of demand.

Thermal energy storage tanks are relatively inexpensive and easy to install, but they can be bulky and take up a lot of space. Phase-change materials, on the other hand, are more compact, but they can be more expensive and require specialized equipment to install. Latent heat storage systems are more efficient but are more complex to implement. Sand batteries are the cheapest solution. They are easy to install with materials from any DIY shop. The only downside is that you may have to dig a hole in your backyard where you would like the sand tank to be built.

When choosing a heating battery, it is important to consider factors such as the size of the system needed, the cost, and the available space. It's also important to consider the compatibility of the heating battery with the heating system that you are using.

In summary, a heating battery is an energy storage system that is used to store heat energy for later use. It allows for the separation of heat generation and consumption, reducing costs and carbon emissions associated with heating. There are several types of heating batteries available in the market, each with its own set of advantages and disadvantages, and it's important to consider factors such as cost, size, efficiency and compatibility before choosing a heating battery.
